Energywise Plastics

The overall objective of ENERGYWISE Plastics is to develop an elearning platform and supporting materials for those working within the European plastics industry to learn and understand how to manage, and reduce, their energy consumption.

ENERGYWISE Plastics will present a ‘blended learning’ approach, offering highly interactive on-line modules and traditional ‘paper-based’ resources. The project will focus on the needs of SMEs, and be highly industry specific covering the seven major processes (injection moulding, extrusion, thermoforming, blow moulding, rotational moulding, composites and compression moulding) as well as understanding energy, managing energy and utilities and peripherals.

There are more than 27,000 companies in the EU that specialise in plastics processing, employing more than 1 million people, many in SMEs. The industry is a substantial user of electricity for motors and drives, heating, cooling and lighting but there is a tendency to view energy costs as fixed overheads. A key aim of ENERGYWISE Plastics will be to alter this perception and demonstrate that energy purchase should be considered as a variable materials cost, with substantial for savings to be made.
